Many times we ask ourselves, what are the attributes of a good leader? The most common responses are self-esteem, courage, self-discipline, optimism, and integrity. These along with setting goals and the ability to motivate others will usually produce a very competent leader.
There is another important attribute that successful leaders possess; and in many ways, this allows the leader to acquire and retain all of the other attributes of a good leader. This is also an attribute that speaks louder than words, and demonstrates that the leader has set and accomplished goals.
This attribute is a leader’s commitment to health and fitness. An unhealthy and out of shape leader will be challenged in regards to motivating others to develop confidence, self-esteem, and self-discipline.
How do leaders find the time to exercise? This is all part of time management, another essential element of successful leadership. If exercise is made a priority, then time can be allotted for it. Exercise can also be combined with other activities such as meditation, listening to podcasts of motivational books, and just the ability to free the mind from the distractions of the office.
Eating healthy is a habit that can promote a positive behavioral change. Many of the common disorders that leaders are challenged with such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, and stress are a result of poor eating habits and the resulting weight concerns.
So, you know that you should exercise more and eat healthier, and it might have been a New Year’s resolution for you the past few years… but here it is March, and you are back to your old routine of eating junk food and sitting at the computer all day and in the recliner in front of the TV in the evening.
Do you need help setting goals with action plans to achieve them? Are your health and fitness keeping you from becoming the leader that you have the capability to be?
